Romania faces challenges in the field of highway infrastructure development, however, it intends to take significant steps to promote the developments. The country expects to pass the 1,200-kilometer highway milestone by 2024, and according to plans, 2025 will also be a successful year for expressways, as the undertaken developments envisage the construction of more than 300 kilometers of new sections.
Expressed in the language of mathematics, however, if Romania wants to reach the average road density of the EU, it would need a total of 4,220 kilometers of highways, as stated in the UNTRR report on the road transport market between 2018-2030. Currently, for example, the density of highways in Bulgaria is almost twice as high as in Romania, reaching 7.3 kilometers per thousand square kilometers. In August 2023, Romania crossed the 1,000-kilometer limit within its highway network, and by the end of 2024, it aims to exceed 1,200 kilometers. According to Newsweek's calculations, based on the promises made in the contract, by the end of 2025, the country's road network, including highways and expressways, is expected to reach 1,500 kilometers.
Among the new developments is the A0 motorway, also known as the Bucharest Ring Road, which includes sections such as section 3 of Bucharest South (DN6 – A1), which is 17.97 kilometers long, and 3 in Bucharest North . section (Afumați – Cernica), which is 8.6 kilometers long.
