The Czech Road Administration is ready for the winter period
Nearly two hundred snow shovels, 44,000 tons of salt solution and 830 maintenance staff await the deployments of this winter season at the Czech Road Administration Office (ŘSD). The first tasks have already started due to the snow in the Krušné Mountains, Krkonoše, Jeseníky and other higher areas. On the mountain highways, the first snowfall is forecast in the coming days, and they are also on standby on the D1 highway at Vysočina, for example. Based on meteorological forecasts, the road management centers coordinate where and when snowfall is expected and direct the snow plows accordingly. They are already working at full capacity, for example, on the I/44 road through the Červenohorské pass, as well as at other locations in the Olomouc region, where 50 tons of salt and more than 18,000 liters of brine were used in the last two days. ŘSD's own employees ensure the passability of a total of approximately 1,100 kilometers of highways and main roads. The maintenance of the highways is the responsibility of the individual regional centers, where on average one center covers sections of 50 kilometers. 677 drivers and 153 dispatchers participate in the prepared shifts, and a total of 196 snow shovels are at their disposal. Additional manpower and equipment for main road maintenance are on standby for the winter months at service companies. A total of 44,005 tons of salt, 2,715,000 liters of brine and 1,516,000 liters of calcium chloride are ready, which will help especially at low temperatures, when salt and brine are less effective.
Every winter of the year, ŘSD uses about 40,000 tons of salt and about ten million liters of brine. In the winter season of 2023-2024, the costs of winter highway maintenance cost about 150 million kroner. **The movement of the snow plows can be followed online** The Pohyby vezidok zimní rační prázného web portal is also available this season, where the movement of the snow plows can be followed on the site udrzba.rsd.cz. Details of traffic availability are also available on the website of the National Transport Information Center at www.dopravniinfo.cz. The current locations of routes and vehicles are displayed on the map, and the color of the routes changes depending on when the road surface was last treated. Clicking on a vehicle icon displays the direction of movement and maintenance activities of the given vehicle. A route that has not been processed in the last six hours remains gray. Motorways and first class main roads are treated first when dealing with problems due to winter conditions, with a maximum response time of 30 minutes after detection.
